Ruth Bancroft Garden Artist Residency
& Pop-Up!

Please come and join me at my Pop-Up! The pop-up is this Saturday 4/20/24 from 10am - 2pm at the Ruth Bancroft Garden. I will have my paintings available for purchase along with 8"x10" prints and a collectors greeting card set. These are works I created during my 2 week artist residency at the Garden. This was a huge experience for me to dive in and create work non-stop for two weeks and the result was 12 new paintings ranging in various sizes from large to small. I experience a sense of calm, focus and drive while working in the garden. I was surrounded by gorgeous thriving plants, hummingbirds, lizards, and butterflies everyday. The amazing staff at the garden were so kind and knowledgeable offering names of plants and information about them that helped guide my work. I could feel Ruth's presence in the garden and the love that is rooted there in every plant. It was a transformative experience. My work was allowed to get large, capturing plein air on large canvases, which was the goal, at the beginning of this residency, for me. I created 3 larger canvas 40"x30" and 2 48"x38". I painted everyday outside, at the spots that are on the paintings, to capture the natural light. I rotated between 3-4 canvas's everyday, as the light would change. I picked the spots I wanted to paint based on visual composition and the relation of the plants/cactus's together with each other.  I dived in, no real sketching before hand, just going for it to capture the light and color. My brushwork was a mix of washy expressionism with some detailed areas, developing the background, middle ground and foreground, as seen in "Agave Fluorescence", which will be available at the Ruth Bancroft Garden's Gala on May 18th.
