The Folly

“The Folly” was painted over several plein air sessions during my artist residency in the fall of 2025 at The Ruth Bancroft Garden. I was immediately drawn to the view of The Folly, the distinctive shade house designed by Ruth Bancroft. The structure has a charming Victorian character and is painted a specific cool green that stands out beautifully among the surrounding plants.
 
In the painting, the shade house emerges from a dense and vibrant foreground of succulents, palms, and flowering plants, creating a layered sense of depth. A koi pond sits in the foreground, guiding the viewer’s eye into the garden. Soft, warm light filters through the foliage, while sweeping palm fronds frame the scene and create movement throughout the composition. A quiet seating area in the middle right invites the viewer to pause and reflect, capturing the peaceful atmosphere and unique beauty of The Ruth Bancroft Garden.
